Marcus is rated as one of the country’s most level-headed sportspeople. He had brought home a horse owned by the late Chris Gerber, held in the highest regard by everyone in racing who died in 2018.Brother to seven-time Hong Kong champion jockey Basil, now a leading trainer. Horse racing was not a major interest for him while he was growing up: "Being a jockey wasn’t a life-long ambition. I only decided six months before I was accepted at the academy." Aged only 13 when he started at the academy in 1984, Marcus was one of the youngest apprentices to be accepted. "I didn’t know what the back of a horse looked like when I got there and started pretty slowly." He has won numerous feature races, most recently driving Like It Hot home 345 in the Charity Mile November Handicap.
